Dane 101 recently did a wonderful piece on the knitting workshop R. Ring’s Kelley Deal is doing in Madison, WI. The event is tomorrow, July 7, before their show at Memorial Union Terrace. Also, please note: R. Ring’s July 9 Milwaukee date has been changed to July 10. The band is currently on tour all over the midwest. Head here to see where.

The Events in a Nutshell:

Like knitting? Like rock and roll? Saturday, July 7 will be one heck of a day for you. Kelley Deal of The Breeders talks amigurumi (cute little knitted animals) at Sow’s Ear in Verona from 3 to 5pm. Her new band R Ring (with Mike Montgomery also of Ampline) plays the Memorial Union Terrace later that night around 9:30 p.m.

The Backstory:

A few years ago Kelley Deal decided to start saying “yes” more often. One wonders what she had been saying “no” to prior to that. One of the things that I love about the woman is that she has always seemed willing to try anything, whether it be taking over lead guitar duties from Tanya Donelly in The Breeders back in the early 1990s (even though she didn’t know how to play guitar yet), or filling in for Carrie Bradshaw on fiddle years later (again, without knowing how to play prior to trying it), playing bass in a bizarre super-group (The Last Hard Men), writing and recording her own songs with The Kelley Deal 6000, putting together a roller derby music video for The Breeders, performing The Long Count (put on by The National’s Aaron and Bryce Dessner), or singing and playing bass on a Devo cover for a skateboarding video for pro skater Kristian Svitak. Or even writing and publishing a book on knitting. Yes knitting, her constant companion in stolen moments for many years. So for a woman who didn’t think she was saying “yes” enough, Kelley Deal was getting an awful lot done.
