Holopaw return to Gramps Bar in Miami for OUT OF THIS — a large gala featuring Prince Rama, Lauren Flax, Jubilee, L-VIS 1990 and, of course, the inimitable Holopaw. It is presented by Diadem and Brooklyn Queer and it kicks off this Thursday, December 5th at 8 PM — a bona fide “Basel Thursday”!
Misra is thankful for a wonderful 2013! It was filled with debuts, charity releases, new albums, LPs, CDs, Cassettes, and more!

PHOSPHORESCENT Aw Come Aw Wry: LP reissue of Phossy’s 2005 album on heavyweight vinyl with slighly altered cover. Fun! Released: Record Store Day 2013.
HOLOPAW Academy Songs, Volume I: In addition to Holopaw, frontman John Orth was also one half of Ugly Casanova alongside Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock. This is Holopaw’s finest album to date. Released: 01/15/13.
Be on the lookout for releases from The Paranoid Style, Motel Beds, Shearwater, Dignan Porch, and more!
Holopaw were featured on Deadspin—the sports website owned by Gawker Media. The site slows down the recent OSU vs. NW game to a ridiculous speed and accompanies it with an older Holopaw track—one from their Sub Pop days.
The premise: strange sports moments are slowed down to ridiculous speeds and matched with indie music. Thanks to Timothy Burke and the fabulous folks at Deadspin!
Via Deadspin (Saturday, October 6):
“We’re not entirely sure how, but as of this writing Ohio State’s only put up one touchdown tonight—and they got it on a punt block that exhibited such dominance you wonder how they’re losing to Northwestern.
Regardless, this is a highlight at any level. We appreciate that ABC/ESPN used a proper camera to film this angle, and giving us the ability to slow it down to something truly stupid.”
This is a Deadspin Video, in which strange sports moments are slowed down to ridiculous speeds and matched with indie music. This video features “Shiver” by Holopaw.
Holopaw head down to Miami, FL to play a show this Saturday… but it’s not just any show. Roger Beebe will provide 16mm visuals during their set. “The Congress of Beauty”: 8 songs + 5 16mm projectors. This is a Grade A treat.
Thanks to Jose Duran, Liz Tracy and the wonderful folks at both Miami and Broward/Palm Beach New Times for great features on Paw. Head (((here))) to read Jose’s “Holopaw’s John Orth Talks Queer Identity, Working as a Visual Artist” and (((here))) to read Liz’s “Holopaw’s John Orth on Whether Gay Can Still Be Edgy and the Beauty of Gainesville.”

Captain’s Dead debuted a new video for Holopaw’s “Golden Years” off of their 2013 Misra release, Academy Songs, Volume I. Keeping it in the family, the video is produced, directed and animated by former Holopaw keyboardist Beachwolf.
According to Paw, “Beachwolf is fueled by a lifetime of limited means and limitless ideas. Schooled in American DIY traditions, he uses common consumer tools to create childlike visions rooted as much in American lore as they are in alien conspiracy theory. Southern pride, northern claustrophobia, lights in the skies and nostalgic sadness all hold equal sway in Beachwolf’s oddly endearing stop motion universe.”
Sleeping States were recently featured on a KEXP podcast: Music That Matters, Vol. 362 – Big Gay Podcast 2013. This is in light of the band’s recently released LGBT Pride Release: Sleeping States “Old vs. New” EP b/w Holopaw “Through ‘Til the Morning” EP.
The split 12″ is pressed on 45 RPM pink vinyl and a portion of proceeds go to the Point Foundation. Both Sleeping States and Holopaw are fronted by openly gay men. Thanks so much to both KEXP and John Grant!
Via KEXP’s John Grant:
“Never underestimate the power of sharing music. Songs and artists with something to say can shape so much: identity, politics, political identity, identity politics… you catch my drift. When I was a teenager, just coming to terms with my homosexuality, the mix tapes my adult friends Steve and Robert made for me pointed toward different, more promising possibilities beyond the day-to-day grind of adolescent life in smalltown Virginia.
While I don’t imagine The Heist booming through the chambers of the Supreme Court, the impact of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ viral smash “One Love” certainly presaged our nation’s evolving opinions on marriage equality and presaged Wednesday’s historic rulings. That video continues to find new audiences and touch listener’s lives, and that’s what I aim for when compiling KEXP’s annual Big Gay Podcast. You’ll find a variety of genres and viewpoints amidst the 18 selections this year, from a woozy, night bus remix of John Grant’s “Black Belt” to the fist-pumping indignation of Kathleen Hanna and the Julie Ruin. Hopefully, one or more of these selections resonates with you and you’ll pass along the 2013 Big Gay Podcast and share the love. Trust me—it can make a big difference.”

“Dirty Boots (He Don’t)” Video Casting Notice
Holopaw and filmmaker Adam Baran recently put out a NYC casting notice for their forthcoming video for “Dirty Boots (He Don’t)” –– track #5 from their recent Academy Songs, Volume I LP. Here is the Facebook event. More info below. If you’re interested, contact Adam at email@example.com.
“Acclaimed Gainesville, FL band Holopaw seeking unique gay or trans male actors and performers to play members of a raucous gay leather biker gang for a sexually charged music video directed by former BUTT Magazine editor Adam Baran. The video is for Holopaw’s song “Dirty Boots (He’ Don’t)”, an homage to the classic Shangri-La’s song “Out in the Streets” from the band’s recent queer concept album Academy Songs, Vol 1. Inspiration for the video includes Kenneth Anger (Scorpio Rising), the German biker youth photographs of Karlheinz Weinberger and the films of Fred Halsted and Joe Gage.”
