R. Ring’s Kelley Deal took some time off touring with The Breeders to head on over to Lil’ Bub’s studio in Bloomington, IN. Lil’ Bub is an extremely special celebrity kitty. Oh, do watch the video above. It features our good friend Nick Eddy from Dayton, OH!
Via Rolling Stone:
“Lil Bub is using her magical space feline powers to make waves in the music business. Two weeks ago, the internet-famous permakitten hosted noted cat enthusiast Steve Albini as a guest on her web series, Lil Bub’s Big Show. Having received an intensive tutorial in music production from Albini, Lil Bub put her fresh skills to work this week on a new single for Breeders guitarist Kelley Deal.
At the opening of the episode, Lil Bub offered to grant one wish to the first person to call in. As luck would have it, Deal won the prize, appearing on a small screen with her own fluffy-headed cat beside her. “Shouldn’t you on tour with the Breeders?” Lil Bub asked. Deal explained that she had a little time off, then made her wish to have Lil Bub produce her next single. Harnessing the power of “science and magic,” Bub transported Deal to a recording studio, where a full band soon materialized.
In addition to producing, Bub plays keyboards on the new song (aided by what appear to be cat treats on the keys) and contributes a few vocals as well. The result of her hard work, a sunny new single called “Shirtcrush,” is available on iTunes.
In a note on her own website, Deal explained how the collaboration with Lil Bub really came together. Her band, R. Ring played a show last year at Bloomington, Indiana’s Russian Recording Studio, which Lil Bub’s “dude” Mike Bridavsky owns and operates. “She is super sweet and she and her Dude are hell bent on bringing magic and love to Earth,” Deal wrote.”
The wonderful folks of Dayton City Paper did a cover a story on Misra. The full feature details the label’s past, present, and future, as well as its recent move to label manager Leo DeLuca’s hometown of Dayton, Ohio. Dayton-tied Misra artists R. Ring (Kelley Deal), Motel Beds, and Crooks on Tape (John Schmersal) are also highlighted. Nearly 20,000 of these are circulating in the Gem City. If you’re in the area, do pick up a copy!
We’re happier than a panda in a bamboo megastore to welcome Dayton, Ohio’s Motel Beds to the fold. Motel Beds are ever on the rise and their brand of no-frills, Midwest rock & roll is just what Grandma Misra needs.
Check out their absurd video for “Tropics of the Sand” — featuring Kelley Deal (The Breeders, R. Ring). To witness the level of musicianship this band is capable of, watch the PopMatters premiered video for “Smoke Your Homework”. Beds member and producer Derl Robbins has also worked on Guided By Voices’ “Class Clown Spots a UFO” (another great Dayton act). The band is comprised entirely of seasoned Gem City vets. Along with playing music, all five members are male dancers at Applebee’s on Wilmington Pike here in Dayton (Tuesdays, lunch shift, 11 AM – 2 PM).
Misra is set to release Motel Beds ”These Are the Days Gone By” in early 2014. The 12-track album highlights a number of Beds favorites — all remastered by Carl Saff (Guided By Voices, Dinosaur Jr, Thurston Moore, Silver Jews, etc.) with added bass parts via Tod Weidner. “These Are the Days” will also feature a never-before-heard version of “Sunfried Dreams”, along with a Matthew Sweet cover. We’re pressing on high-quality vinyl and CD. The LP covers will be limited, outrageous, and very special. You’ll see. They’re also prepping a split 7″ with R. Ring (Kelley Deal & Mike Montgomery) for future release.
Motel Beds will hit the road consistently next year. They play Fraze Pavilion (pictured below) in Dayton this coming Tuesday, August 27 @ 8 PM. Tickets are $2. You can’t beat that. Dayton Daily News’ Don Thrasher (GBV, Swearing at Motorists) wrote a piece featuring both Beds and Misra today. If you’re in the Gem City, pick up a copy. More soon… Bye.
Between their time touring with The Breeders on the Last Splash 20th anniversary tour (Kelley on lead guitar/vocals and Mike helping with sound), R. Ring have managed to sneak into Mike’s Candyland Recording Studio to record a couple tracks. Be looking for new music from the band in the near future.
R. RING • Watch Kelley Deal of R. Ring & The Breeders Play “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” with the Latter
Kelley Deal of R. Ring and The Breeders has been touring with the latter these latter days. The Breeders are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their seminal album Last Splash and made a stop by “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” to perform the classic hit “Cannonball.” More from R. Ring very soooooooon. This performance is great!
Transistor Six Sessions pay homage to the BBC’s Peel Sessions. They invite artists into their little studio setup at ‘Frank’ in Austin, record a few live songs, take some photos with their Lomo film cameras, do an interview, and often shoot a film on Super 8.
While R. Ring was down in Austin for SXSW 2012, Transistor Six caught up with them. Check out the beautiful work they did! We are grateful for all the time, care, and thought put into R. Ring’s session!
Jerry DeCicca, the phenomenal songwriter behind The Black Swans, is prepping a new record under the name “Jerry David DeCicca.” The album will feature Spooner Oldham, Will Oldham, Kelley Deal and more.
A reminder that R. Ring’s Kelley Deal will join the reunited Last Splash-era Breeders (Josephine, Jim, Kelley, Kim) to celebrate 4AD’s deluxe reissue of this wonderful album. The reissue arrives in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Last Splash (yes, it really is 20 years old).
Misra’s R. Ring release got some love around the announcement of it all. “Fallout & Fire” was featured in Pitchfork’s announcement of the 20th Anniversary reissue of The Breeders’ Last Splash.
This is particularly exciting for Misra, as three of the Last Splash-era Breeders (Kelley, her identical twin sister Kim Deal, and drummer Jim McPherson) live right here in the label’s hometown of Dayton, OH. The band will do a warm-up show at the Southgate House Revival – a historic regional venue and the original mansion of Tommy gun inventor John T. Thompson. Spirits are high around this momentous event.
