Crooks on Tape‘s John Schmersal is known for his time in legendary Dayton, Ohio band Brainiac. When 3RA1N1AC came to an end, Schmersal formed Enon (another singular underground band—named for a rural community near Dayton).

These days, along with jumpstarting COT (with his old Enon bandmate Rick Lee and drummer Joey Galvan), Schmersal has stayed busy playing bass in Caribou and subbing for Eli Janney in Girls Against Boys. Now, he’s formed Vertical Scratchers — *another* brand new band.

Yes, John Schmersal and ex-Triclops!/Anywhere member Christian Beaulieu release the debut Vertical Scratchers album Daughter of Everything on February 25 via Merge Records. Guided by Voices frontman and fellow Daytonian Robert Pollard contributes guest vocals. You can listen to VS’s new album here via Pitchfork Advance until February 24.

Go John, go!

John Schmersal (of Crooks On Tape, Enon, Brainiac, Caribou) is more than making up for not releasing music since Enon fell asleep in 2007. In addition to releasing Crooks On Tape’s debut album Fingerprint with Misra (out now), John started *another* brand new band called Vertical Scratchers. VS also has a debut album — out in early 2014 via the wonderful folks at Merge! Hell yes!
