Paste Magazine Features Will Johnson’s Baseball Paintings

Posted at 9:22 am

Will Johnson is a wonderful fellow. Grandma Misra loves that dude. In addition to fronting Centro-matic & South San Gabriel, his solo career, his drum duties with Monsters of Folk, his participation in New Multitudes (with Yim Yames, Jay Farrar, and Anders Parker), etcetera, Will is also an avid baseball lover and painter. He marries the two by creating baseball paintings and Paste Magazine recently featured them. WJ will head on tour soon. Check out the dates below.

Praise Continues to Roll in for The Black Swans’ “Occasion for Song”

Posted at 6:21 pm

The Black Swans newest release, Occasion for Song, has been receiving a lot of praise, including a great cumulative score from Metacritic. In addition, Consequence of Sound described the album as “…the band’s most shatteringly personal offering to date.”  AllMusic gave the album 4/5 stars and stated “He [DeCicca] uses allusion, metaphor, and history to weave his own hybrid mythology; none of his songs feel strictly confessional — even if they are — which is part of what makes The Black Swans’ sparse Americana so compelling.”

Just a reminder:  you can purchase the album from Grandma Misra’s online store.

Centro-matic Paste Video Premiere – Bastrop County Fire Memorial Video

Posted at 8:37 pm

Last year, Misra donated some of our Will Johnson & Centro-matic stock to WJ’s efforts in aiding Bastrop County fire victims. To note: credit should be given to Will, not Misra, for this great thought and effort. Alas, we were very happy to help in the cause.

Pulled from Paste Magazine‘s website:

To memorialize the victims, Denton-based rockers Centro-matic filmed a video for their song “Against the Line” amongst some of the fire’s debris. The video is meant to highlight the devastation the fire caused, but also to bring hope—it features a group of children cleaning up debris from a charred forest.

Centro-matic’s Will Johnson explains:

“The 2011 Bastrop County fires affected thousands of people, homes, pets and wildlife in an area very dear to my family and many of our friends. My wife, step-son and I lived out there for a time, and the Lost Pines State Park quickly became our common weekend destination; a place of sanctuary and inspiration. Our band held a couple of fundraisers in the aftermath of these devastating fires, but found that we also wanted to pay tribute in a more creative way. This video is our means of tribute to the area, its people, and the rebuilding efforts and signs of new life that are taking place in Bastrop County.”

Paste writes up Southeast Engine & R. Ring

Posted at 9:52 pm

Paste Magazine did a nice feature on Nelsonville Music Festival 2012. The article kicks off with a mention of Southeast Engine’s Adam & Jesse Remnant and also includes an R. Ring shout-out, along with pictures of the band. Both Southeast Engine and R. Ring had the pleasure of joining Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Roky Erickson, Guided By Voices, M. Ward, Andrew Bird, and many more at NMF this year.
