Crooks On Tape “Fingerprint” • CD/Digital Officially Out Today!

Crooks On Tape Fingerprint is officially out on CD/Digital formats today! Pick up a copy at any retailer or digital service provider!

Crooks on Tape is John Schmersal (Enon, Brainiac), Rick Lee (Enon, Skeleton Key, Butter 08), and Joey Galvan. The unscripted band was born out of a simple notion: convene, improvise, and record every moment.

In 2010, the Los Angeles trio assembled a rotating fortress of instruments, synthesizers, samplers, and loopers. Crooks recorded hundreds of hours of material, largely instrumental in its original performance. Fingerprint is the first evidence of this undertaking and a window into the band’s sound. The debut record you hear is analogous to tiny snapshots of an altered crime scene.

In many ways, Crooks picks up where Enon left off. Rick and John created two instrumental records in Enon’s early days (Long Play and On Hold). Fingerprint is an outgrowth of those directions, spun in a totally live, improvisational context, augmented by vocals. Though unpredictable, Joey’s marked drumming style provides the adhesion, gluing the group together when sessions become too cacophonous.

Misra Records is now based in Dayton, OH — the hometown of Schmersal and his former band Brainiac. Strange, unformed, wildly intriguing snippets of Fingerprint began making their way to the label in early 2013. Each song sounded like a story unfolding. Songs were amended, vocals were added, and a debut album began to develop.

This material is mined from sessions lasting between winter, 2010 – Spring, 2012. The band has since moved from the location where these documents were made. They are hard at work constructing a new space. John has been dividing his time between Crooks on Tape, Caribou, Girls Against Boys (occasionally subbing for Eli Janney), and playing with another new band. You can expect many more records to evolve from this time period alone.

Fingerprint is for Crooks a pop record — the band at its most accessible. Stranger things are to follow.

Track List:

1. Duper
2. If Feelings Mean a Thing
3. Tito’s Riser
4. The Regiments
5. Melting the Ice
6. Summer’s End

7. River Bait
8. Milo’s Creeper
9. A Hazmat Dream
10. Wandered Again
11. Clergyman Segway
12. Barging In

Spineriders (Jason Molina’s Old Band) • Pitchfork, SPIN, MAGNET, Under the Radar, PopMatters, Line of Best Fit, etc.

Spineriders—the old band of the late, great Jason Molina (Songs: Ohia, Magnolia Electric Co)—has seen some phenomenal press (some below). Misra co-released Spineriders Hello Future Tinglies with Aquabear Legion. AB is the Athens-OH based art collective of Molina’s boyhood friend and Spineriders/Songs: Ohia founding member Todd Jacops + Lorain, OH native/Admiral King H.S. Alum (Molina’s boyhood home/alma mater) Brian Koscho. Spineriders drummer Carl Raponi made some prints for the occasion (on sale as well) and provided some (forthcoming) video footage.

We pressed the album on cassette—an effort to stay true to the times in which this music was made. There are only 300 of these puppies in existence and they are going quick. Head here to purchase and support. All proceeds to Musicians Emergency Medical Association (memafund.org).

Motel Beds Sign to Misra!

Beds_Misra

We’re happier than a panda in a bamboo megastore to welcome Dayton, Ohio’s Motel Beds to the fold. Motel Beds are ever on the rise and their brand of no-frills, Midwest rock & roll is just what Grandma Misra needs.

Check out their absurd video for “Tropics of the Sand” — featuring Kelley Deal (The Breeders, R. Ring). To witness the level of musicianship this band is capable of, watch the PopMatters premiered video for “Smoke Your Homework”. Beds member and producer Derl Robbins has also worked on Guided By Voices’ “Class Clown Spots a UFO” (another great Dayton act). The band is comprised entirely of seasoned Gem City vets. Along with playing music, all five members are male dancers at Applebee’s on Wilmington Pike here in Dayton (Tuesdays, lunch shift, 11 AM – 2 PM).

Misra is set to release Motel Beds ”These Are the Days Gone By” in early 2014. The 12-track album highlights a number of Beds favorites — all remastered by Carl Saff (Guided By Voices, Dinosaur Jr, Thurston Moore, Silver Jews, etc.) with added bass parts via Tod Weidner. “These Are the Days” will also feature a never-before-heard version of “Sunfried Dreams”, along with a Matthew Sweet cover. We’re pressing on high-quality vinyl and CD. The LP covers will be limited, outrageous, and very special. You’ll see. They’re also prepping a split 7″ with R. Ring (Kelley Deal & Mike Montgomery) for future release.

Motel Beds will hit the road consistently next year. They play Fraze Pavilion (pictured below) in Dayton this coming Tuesday, August 27 @ 8 PM.  Tickets are $2. You can’t beat that. Dayton Daily News’ Don Thrasher (GBV, Swearing at Motorists) wrote a piece featuring both Beds and Misra today. If you’re in the Gem City, pick up a copy. More soon… Bye.

Southeast Engine: KEXP Video + Phenomenal PopMatters Piece + Alison Vagnini Photos + More!

Posted at 1:58 pm

Great Praise continues to roll in for Southeast Engine, including a phenomenal piece by Andrew Gilstrap of PopMatters called “Fear and Hope in the Great Depression,” as well as a beautiful acoustic video of “Ruthie” (off SEE’s Canary). The video was filmed live at Pickathon by the kindhearted badasses of KEXP in Seattle and The PopMatters article addresses the themes of both Canary (2011) and its companion EP Canaanville (2012).

In addition, the band had some wonderful new photos taken by the wildly talented Alison Vagnini while they were touring through Denver, CO on their way to Pickathon 2012. The first is up there for all to see.

Southeast Engine Continues to Impress | Mountain Stage Performance Rebroadcast

Posted at 6:45 am

A week after the release of Canaanville, the praise continues to roll in.  Andrew Gistrap describes Canaanville and Canary as “[o]ne of the most recent, and most striking portrayals of small-town life” in his eloquent field study for PopMatters.  It’s not every day they appear on a list with Kanye and Ben Gibbard, but in their “must hear countdown” AV Club says: “Old Oak Tree” is a sweet little tune about love, death, and small-town living.”  The boys even had a chance to catch up with WOUB.

In addition, NPR’s Mountain Stage will be rebroadcasting Southeast Engine’s performance from last October.  You can listen to it on your local NPR affiliate on August 10th.
