Stereogum Debuts Crooks on Tape’s Phenomenal “Duper” Video!

Posted at 9:48 am

The fabulous folks at Sterogum debuted the video for “Duper” — the leadoff track from the band’s debut album “Fingerprint,” out now on Misra.

Crooks on Tape, a brand new band featuring John Schmersal (Enon, Brainiac, Caribou, Vertical Scratchers), Rick Lee (Enon, Skeleton Key) and Joey Galvan, set out on their flagship tour in the heart of the harrowed Polar Vortex™ of 2014. At January’s onset, the band were met with, literally, -20 degree weather in Minneapolis, Madison, and more.

In an effort to keep morale from plummeting during shows that had the National Weather Bureau advising folks to stay inside, Crooks on Tape and tour manager/comedian Bob Schriner sought solace in swanky hotel rooms. Due to Schriner’s connections and prowess, not only were the rooms paid for in-full, but they came complete with superfluous amenities (including bathrobes).

Never a band to miss a creative opportunity, Crooks on Tape seized the moment and recorded video footage for “Duper” — the leadoff track from their debut record Fingerprint, out now on Misra Records. Back home in Los Angeles, the band had filmmaker Paul Cordes Wilm augment the footage and create the wild music video you see here.

Crooks On Tape “Fingerprint” • CD/Digital Officially Out Today!

Posted at 8:20 am

Crooks On Tape Fingerprint is officially out on CD/Digital formats today! Pick up a copy at any retailer or digital service provider!

Crooks on Tape is John Schmersal (Enon, Brainiac), Rick Lee (Enon, Skeleton Key, Butter 08), and Joey Galvan. The unscripted band was born out of a simple notion: convene, improvise, and record every moment.

In 2010, the Los Angeles trio assembled a rotating fortress of instruments, synthesizers, samplers, and loopers. Crooks recorded hundreds of hours of material, largely instrumental in its original performance. Fingerprint is the first evidence of this undertaking and a window into the band’s sound. The debut record you hear is analogous to tiny snapshots of an altered crime scene.

In many ways, Crooks picks up where Enon left off. Rick and John created two instrumental records in Enon’s early days (Long Play and On Hold). Fingerprint is an outgrowth of those directions, spun in a totally live, improvisational context, augmented by vocals. Though unpredictable, Joey’s marked drumming style provides the adhesion, gluing the group together when sessions become too cacophonous.

Misra Records is now based in Dayton, OH — the hometown of Schmersal and his former band Brainiac. Strange, unformed, wildly intriguing snippets of Fingerprint began making their way to the label in early 2013. Each song sounded like a story unfolding. Songs were amended, vocals were added, and a debut album began to develop.

This material is mined from sessions lasting between winter, 2010 – Spring, 2012. The band has since moved from the location where these documents were made. They are hard at work constructing a new space. John has been dividing his time between Crooks on Tape, Caribou, Girls Against Boys (occasionally subbing for Eli Janney), and playing with another new band. You can expect many more records to evolve from this time period alone.

Fingerprint is for Crooks a pop record — the band at its most accessible. Stranger things are to follow.

Track List:

1. Duper
2. If Feelings Mean a Thing
3. Tito’s Riser
4. The Regiments
5. Melting the Ice
6. Summer’s End

7. River Bait
8. Milo’s Creeper
9. A Hazmat Dream
10. Wandered Again
11. Clergyman Segway
12. Barging In

Stereogum Premieres Crooks On Tape

The wonderful folks at Stereogum premiered Crooks On Tapes’ “If Feelings Means a Thing”. The song is track two off their forthcoming debut record Fingerprint. “Feelings” is a dark, brooding, atmospheric number set in 3/4 time. It asks and tells. It’s a beautiful song. As with many Crooks numbers, “Feelings” picks up where Enon (the former band of Crooks members John Schmersal and Rick Lee) left off.

Fingerprint is out 10/22 (CD/Digital) and 11/5 (LP/Cassette). Crooks were recently picked up by Windish Agency as well and will tour in the coming months. Stay tuned!
