Stereogum Premieres Crooks On Tape

Posted at 9:32 am

The wonderful folks at Stereogum premiered Crooks On Tapes’ “If Feelings Means a Thing”. The song is track two off their forthcoming debut record Fingerprint. “Feelings” is a dark, brooding, atmospheric number set in 3/4 time. It asks and tells. It’s a beautiful song. As with many Crooks numbers, “Feelings” picks up where Enon (the former band of Crooks members John Schmersal and Rick Lee) left off.

Fingerprint is out 10/22 (CD/Digital) and 11/5 (LP/Cassette). Crooks were recently picked up by Windish Agency as well and will tour in the coming months. Stay tuned!

Posted at 8:01 am

The fine folks of SPIN Magazine featured Sleeping States and Holopaw in a phenomenal feature on the two acts’ new split 12″ LGBT pride release (45 RPM, pink vinyl). Both acts are fronted by openly gay men (John Orth with Paw and Markland Starkie with SS). See more below.

Excerpt from SPIN feature:

“The double-billed treat is currently available in digital and pink vinyl formats (via Misra). A portion of proceeds from album sales will go toward the Point Foundation, an organization that provides support to LGBTQ students. For a preview of the collection, below hear Sleeping States’ achingly tuneful “Planning My Escape” (originally premiered via OUT), followed by Holopaw’s restless “Through ‘Til the Morning,” which somehow transitions from an electronic chin-stroker to a tribal chant (via Stereogum).”

Please “like” and share the feature and, most importantly, purchase a copy. It supports a great cause

Stereogum Premieres Holopaw “Through ‘Til The Morning” (Califone Remix) • Sleeping States / Holopaw LGBT Pride Month Release Out This Tuesday, 6/18

The fine folks at Stereogum premiered Holopaw’s “Through ‘Til The Morning” today! The 9+ minute dreamlike piece occupies the entire side of the forthcoming Sleeping States / Holopaw LGBT Pride Month 45 RPM split 12″ (on pink vinyl with a portion of proceeds to Point Foundation).

Via Stereogum:

Misra Records is celebrating LGBT Pride Month in a really interesting way with this baffling new release from Holopaw (split with Sleeping States). Basically what happened here is Brian Deck and Benny Massarella of Califone (who announced their new album today) took Holopaw’s recent album, Academy Songs Vol. 1, and remixed the entire thing into a nine-minute song titled “Through ‘Til The Morning.” Sounds kind of intimidating, but even at nine minutes the track is absolutely overflowing with ideas yet never feels like a patchwork of songs. It’s a total journey, and hearing how it gets from its electronics-with-field-recording opening to a full-on tribal freak-out has just gotten more enjoyable with each listen. But what does this have to do with LGBT Pride Month, you ask? Well, both Markland Starkie (of Sleeping States) and John Orth (of Holopaw) are openly gay, and a portion of the sales go to The Point Foundation, a group set up to help support LGBTQ students. Give the track a listen below and check out the A-side by Sleeping States via OUT Magazine.

Timothy & Elizabeth Bracy: The Paranoid Style, Writing for Washington Post, NPR, Sterogum, & More

Posted at 12:52 pm

Time & Breath eat cake.

In recent days, Misra co-founder and Mendoza Line frontman Timothy Bracy, alongside wife and Bird of Youth accordionist Elizabeth Nelson, have duly heartened Grandma via word and sound. The dream twosome have been writing for The Washington Post, NPR, Stereogum, etc. and rocking in a new band called The Paranoid Style.

  • Read this Stereogum feature Tim & Beth wrote on The Replacements’ Please to Meet Me turning 25.
  • Watch The Paranoid Style’s ”Subtraction By Subtraction” video. Fun side note: this number also features Southeast Engine keyboardist Billy Matheny & Southeast Engine drummer/Misra manager Leo DeLuca.

Friends in The Wrens

Posted at 8:09 am

Grandma’s old friends in The Wrens made Stereogum’s Top 20 Albums We’ve Been Waiting For Forever today. Coincidentally, Misra’s History page was just updated to include The Wrens’ compact, yet pivotal, part in the label’s story. We’ll gladly wait another 9 years if the forthcoming record is as wonderful as their past efforts. We’re sure it will be. Hellz bellz.
