Today marks the four year anniversary of Noel Sayre’s passing. A luminary in the Ohio underground, Noel played violin for our beloved Black Swans. He also performed with the West Virginia and Portsmouth Symphony orchestras and worked as a guitar and violin teacher.
Sayre was in a swimming accident on July 1, 2008. After going on life support, he passed away on July 3, 2008. He was a gentle, wildly talented, (handsome) soul and is sorely missed by many.
The Black Swans recently made Uprooted Music Revue’s Favorite 25 Recordings of 2012 (So Far) for Occasion for Song (an album that isn’t even out until 7/31). This is a testimony to the power of the record.
Chris Mateer – the phenomenal fellow behind the list – is also conducting an interview with frontman Jerry DeCicca. The interview will appear via both Uprooted Music Revue and No Depression.
Also, check out that amazing new Black Swans press photo. Jerry’s alter-ego is Dr. Silverfoot – a balloon sculptor.
MTV Hive has recommended The Black Swans’ Occasion for Song (out July 31) as part of their summer playlists. Check out the piece here and pre-order the album here. It really is a beautiful collection of songs. Thanks to MTV Hive and Jim Allen for the support!
The Black Swans have been one of Grandma’s very favorites for a long while now. She first saw them play back in 2004 at Donkey Coffee in Athens, OH on the heels of their debut album Who Will Walk in the Darkness with You?
The band has changed a lot since then, but still managed to retain the same beautiful, strange, intelligent ethos. Here is evidence of all that — a house show video of the song “Fickled & Faded” off their forthcoming Misra release Occasion for Song (July 31). It’s one in a series now up on The Black Swans YouTube channel.
Too, Columbus Alive! and Donewaiting did nice previews on the new album a bit back. Look for an unrolling of national press upon the album’s release. You can pre-order Occasion for Song here for a limited-time lower price.
Thanks for supporting independent music!
The Black Swans and Southeast Engine are both featured on the recent release of Sunshine Off the Tracks: A Benefit Compilation for Gems. The comp features Nat Baldwin (Dirty Projectors) and artists from K, Domino, Western Vinyl, and more. It was released by our good friend David Pokrivnak of Wild Kindness Records to help GEMS – a New York-based organization designed to serve females, ages 12-24, who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking.
Misra Manager Leo DeLuca wrote the press release for Sunshine, which you can read here:
Sunshine Off the Tracks: A Benefit for GEMS – Press Release:
On March 31, 2012 Wild Kindness Records will release Sunshine Off the Tracks: A Benefit for GEMS. Girls Educational & Mentoring Services (GEMS) is a New York-based organization designed to serve females, ages 12-24, who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking. GEMS’ mission is to empower girls and young women to exit the commercial sex industry and develop their full potential. Sunshine Off the Tracks features contributions from a wide array of independent musicians and record labels.
The idea for a benefit compilation was first conceived when members of the Wild Kindness team viewed Very Young Girls – a documentary detailing the atrocities of commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking. Deeply moved by the film, and surrounded by a community of talented artists, the WK team decided to cull a songset to benefit the cause. Envisioning it to be solely released by Wild Kindness, this notion quickly changed when artists and labels across the country began to show great response and an eagerness to contribute.
Sunshine Off the Tracks is one small way to spread the message of GEMS and work toward ending the commercial sex industry. Wild Kindness would like to extend its sincere gratitude to GEMS, the many artists and labels who contributed to the cause, and those who show their support through the purchase of this album. Thank you.
