“Motel Beds … one of music’s best kept secrets … These Are the Days Gone By feels like the perfect way to jump into their sprawling discography, and new fans couldn’t ask for a better-sounding or more thoughtfully compiled portal to the world of everlasting summer that the Beds have created for themselves.

August 26: Official Release of Motel Beds “These Are the Days Gone By”

Posted at 8:47 am

frontcover_final_HiRes

August 26, 2014 A.D. — Two months from now, folks from all over the map will have the opportunity to purchase The Motel Beds’ “These Are the Days Gone By.” Misra initially toyed with the idea of releasing this record late last year, however, due to some changes made at Camp Misra, we opted to postpone until the aforementioned date. Namely, the label will soon be moving distribution; we’ll have more on that soon.

We’re super excited for the world to hear “These Are the Days Gone By.” For now, please take a few minutes to read about the album below, behold the official album cover above, and [listen] to “Tropics of the Sand” — a Motel Beds duet with Kelley Deal. “Tropics,” as with all songs on “Days,” has been remastered by Carl Saff (Guided By Voices, Dinosaur Jr., etc). It arrived as a super limited split 7″ on Record Store Day 2014, accompanying a gorgeous track by Brooklyn artist TORRES. You can pick that up [here].

We’ll have some more Motel Beds goodies up for sale/pre-order in two shakes of a lamb’s tail. If you’re in one of the cities below, do make sure to see Beds live; they are truly one of the greatest live acts in the country. Thank you for your support!

MOTEL BEDS are a rock & roll band from Dayton, Ohio—a delightfully detached underdog city nestled in the heart of The Heartland. Seasoned veterans, Beds have worked alongside local advocates Kelley Deal (Deal duets on the lusciously hushed “Tropics of the Sand”) and Robert Pollard (guitarist Derl Robbins has recorded Guided By Voices). Allies aside, when it comes to rock & roll, Motel Beds speak for themselves.

These Are the Days Gone By reveals the fruits of Beds’ labor these latter years. The album is an electrifying collection of “hits,” remastered by Carl Saff (GBV, Dinosaur Jr., etc.) and featuring added bass parts by new(est) member and local ace Tod Weidner. Over a 12-song cycle, the proficiency with which Tommy Cooper and P.J. Paslosky—Motel Beds’ core songwriting duo—augment a solid hook is clearly set on display.

While Days largely finds Ian Kaplan at work as one of the finest rock drummers around today (not an embellishment), Beds demonstrate their versatility with two never-before-released tracks: a poppier version of 2011’s “Sunfried Dreams” and a beautiful acoustic cover of Matthew Sweet’s “I’ve Been Waiting”; the latter proving Paslosky to be much more than a rock vocalist. In addition to recording Motel Beds in a visionary manner, guitarist Derl Robbins adds his own unmistakable style and sound.

True to Dayton (see GBV’s Propeller), the first 500 LPs are all one-of-a-kind. Each cover was individually hand-painted by the artists at We Care Arts: a non-profit dedicated to “changing disabilities into possibilities.” A portion of the proceeds from these first 500 will go to benefit WCA.

In his glowing review of Dumb Gold (2012), AllMusic Senior Editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine noted, “[This] is an album that deserves to break them out of the Rust Belt and onto the larger stage; it’s one of the best straight-ahead indie rock records of 2012.” Days takes all of Dumb Gold’s assets—songwriting, hooks, musicianship, energy—and ups them ad infinitum. It’s a remarkable rock record and one that finds Motel Beds carrying the torch for Dayton, Ohio’s independent music scene.

2. Ocean Flows
3. Skymade Suit

17 Years Since the Passing of Brainiac’s Timmy Taylor, an Artist Who Had a Huge Impact on Misra

Posted at 5:33 pm

bbbbbbbbbbrainiac
(Brainiac at the Lithuanian Club • Spring, 1995)

This week marks the 17-year anniversary of the passing of Brainiac’s Timmy Taylor. The wildly original 3RA1N1AC were at the forefront of a creative swell that hit Dayton, OH in the 1990s. While the underdog city—the homebase of Misra—is no stranger to innovation (the airplane, the cash register, the starter motor, Zapp & Roger, The Ohio Players, etc. all being born in Dayton), it seemed to be a particularly imaginative time.

Bands like The Breeders, Guided By Voices, Cage, Swearing at Motorists, A Ten O’Clock Scholar, Cigarhead (and so many more) were all buzzing about town. One could head to Canal Street Tavern, The Sub Galley, The Lithuanian Club, The Chameleon Club, Trader Vic’s, Gem City Records, Network, etc. and feel the excitement in the air. All-ages shows were frequent; the whole community was involved.

Alas, I think many heard and saw and believed that Brainiac were The One. The chemistry and ingenuity the four members possessed (Timmy, Juan Monasterio, John Schmersal, and Tyler Trent) seemed otherworldly. It was truly something special. Though it comes nowhere close to displaying the band’s magnitude, you can glean a distorted impression below:

After working with Kim Deal of The Breeders/Pixies, playing Lollapalooza, touring with Beck, and releasing albums on Touch & Go and Grass, the band was posed to sign a substantial recording agreement with Interscope Records. Pre-production for Brainiac’s fourth album was in motion when founder and front-man Timmy Taylor passed away in a car accident on May 23, 1997. A memorial show featuring The Breeders, Guided By Voices, Swearing at Motorists, Mink, and Lazy was held in Dayton shortly after.

Taylor’s effect is still very much alive today. Everyone from The Wrens to The Mars Volta to Nine Inch Nails have cited 3RA1N1AC as an influence. He was a phenomenal artist that had a beautiful and unparalleled impact on so many. Let us celebrate the life of Timmy Taylor.

NOTE: This piece originally ran on Donewaiting — Ohio’s main independent music blog. It was written by Misra overseer Leo DeLuca.

NOTE REDUX: It’s a long, tedious story, but 3RA1N1AC were labelmates with The Wrens back in the day. DeLuca’s old band Southeast Engine (SEE) opened for The Wrens in Ohio — DeLuca geeked with The Wrens over Brainiac ad infinitum. In turn, The Wrens watched SEE’s set and, apparently, liked what they saw enough to put in a good word with Misra Records. SEE signed on with Misra a couple months later.

A few years down the line, DeLuca ended up at the helm of Misra Records. He showed the Donewaiting piece to John Schmersal (Brainiac, Crooks On Tape, Enon, Caribou, Vertical Scratchers); Schmersal sent along the debut recordings for Crooks On Tape and C.O.T. signed on with Misra. 3RA1N1AC!
