Well over a year ago, Grandma Misra began speaking with David Pokrivnak – the visionary behind the newly-launched, Youngstown-based Wild Kindness Records. Pokrivnak had helped out at legendary K Records for a good spell. A designer by trade, DP possesses a true talent for the visual end of running a record label. Grandma and David began chatting and collaborating and supporting one another in their mutual endeavors.
Among other items, this resulted in David helping with design for the early 2012 reissue of Shearwater’s Winged Life and Misra manager Leo DeLuca writing the press release and facilitating Black Swans & Southeast Engine tracks to Wild Kindness’ Sunshine Off the Tracks: A Benefit for GEMS. Girls Educational & Mentoring Services (GEMS) is a New York-based organization designed to serve females, ages 12-24, who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking.
Now, the time has come for Misra and Wild Kindness to do a joint release proper. Holopaw’s “Golden Sparklers” b/w “Yearling’s Darlings,” a 500-run limited 7″, will arrive November 13 via Misra/WK.
“Golden Sparklers” is the lead-off single via Paw’s forthcoming Academy Songs, Volume I (Misra; January 15, 2013) and it is absolutely breathtaking. The track recently premiered on Pitchfork and you can head [here] to hear.

Pitchfork premiered Holopaw’s “Golden Sparklers” today. Thanks so much to Larry, Jenn & all at P4K. How wonderful.
“Golden Sparklers” is the leadoff single from Academy Songs, Volume I (release: 1/15). Set in the close quarters of an all-boys preparatory academy and the world beyond its “ivied walls,” Holopaw have crafted a truly magnificent album. To note: the LP & CD covers are two different photographs.
“Golden Sparklers” is also the A-Side of the very limited, hand-numbered “Golden Sparklers” b/w “Yearling’s Darlings” 7″ (release: 11/13). Our dear friends at Wild Kindness Records will aid in the release of the 7″. The full-length will be solely a Misra endeavor.
>> Pre-order both here. Thanks so much for supporting independent art & music!
The Black Swans and Southeast Engine are both featured on the recent release of Sunshine Off the Tracks: A Benefit Compilation for Gems. The comp features Nat Baldwin (Dirty Projectors) and artists from K, Domino, Western Vinyl, and more. It was released by our good friend David Pokrivnak of Wild Kindness Records to help GEMS – a New York-based organization designed to serve females, ages 12-24, who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking.
Misra Manager Leo DeLuca wrote the press release for Sunshine, which you can read here:
Sunshine Off the Tracks: A Benefit for GEMS – Press Release:
On March 31, 2012 Wild Kindness Records will release Sunshine Off the Tracks: A Benefit for GEMS. Girls Educational & Mentoring Services (GEMS) is a New York-based organization designed to serve females, ages 12-24, who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking. GEMS’ mission is to empower girls and young women to exit the commercial sex industry and develop their full potential. Sunshine Off the Tracks features contributions from a wide array of independent musicians and record labels.
The idea for a benefit compilation was first conceived when members of the Wild Kindness team viewed Very Young Girls – a documentary detailing the atrocities of commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking. Deeply moved by the film, and surrounded by a community of talented artists, the WK team decided to cull a songset to benefit the cause. Envisioning it to be solely released by Wild Kindness, this notion quickly changed when artists and labels across the country began to show great response and an eagerness to contribute.
Sunshine Off the Tracks is one small way to spread the message of GEMS and work toward ending the commercial sex industry. Wild Kindness would like to extend its sincere gratitude to GEMS, the many artists and labels who contributed to the cause, and those who show their support through the purchase of this album. Thank you.
