Bablicon

The trio that comprised Bablicon -- the Diminisher, Marta Tennae, and Blue Hawaii -- played music that drew from experimental jazz, fusion, rock, and Indian music, but eluded easy fits into any of these categories. In that respect they did fit in with the late-1990s Chicago "post-rock" scene. Their debut LP, In a Different City, was recorded in an abandoned machine shop; it was so close to Chicago's elevated train that they were sometimes interrupted by the noise. Everyone in Bablicon was a multi-instrumentalist, between them covering various horns, electronic keyboards, bass, cello, "fuzz banjo," theremin, and more. Several friends also pitched in, and tape splices and edits were employed, although the music largely retained a live feel. The band's discography went on to include The Orange Tapered Moon (2000) and A Flat Inside a Fog, The Cat That Was a Dog (2001) before the group disbanded.
